Conflict Zone was inspired by Joao Silva, the New York Times photographer who lost both legs in a landmine blast in October 2010 in Afghanistan. Brought together by a U.S. Marine, Joao's colleagues from the press corps agreed to pool their work for a multimedia art exhibit that brings together some of the most celebrated combat journalists and photographers of our time. Chris Hondros, one of Joao's colleagues and a featured photographer in the exhibit, was killed in Libya in April 2011. Conflict Zone is now dedicated to him.

The work exhibited in Conflict Zone first appeared in the New York Times, Getty Images, the Washington Post, CBS News, the St. Petersburg Times and USA Today among others. Contributors include both military and civilian journalists.

friends and colleagues in the press corps. Joao

returned home to South Africa in December after

more than a year undergoing treatment in D.C.

Michael is an American writer and photographer who served in the Special Forces in the early-1980s, one of the youngest soldiers to pass the Green Beret selection process. He became a general freelance writer in the mid-1990s. He focused on military writing after the invasion of Iraq. Yon has been embedded on numerous occasions with American and British troops in Iraq.

Jackie Spinner is a Fulbright Scholar in Oman for the 2010-2011 academic year where she is teaching digital journalism. She is a former Washington Post correspondent and author of Tell Them I Didn't Cry: A young journalist's story of joy, loss and survival in Iraq. After recovering from PTSD and injuries sustained on assignment in Iraq, Jackie became a board member of the Independence Fund and advocates on behalf of veterans who return from conflict zones with PTSD and substance abuse issues.

Joel was a combat photographer assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force during the Battle of Fallujah. Following the Marines throughout the assault Chevrari captured some of the most vivid and honest pictures from this important battle which were picked up by wire services throughout the world. Fallujah has since become known as the Hue City for this generation of Marines, and Chevarris work is an important piece that chronicles that history.

Sig Christenson is a senior writer covering the military for the San Antonio Express-News and been with the paper since 1997. He was embedded with the 3rd Infantry Division during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, and has since returned to Baghdad four times as a unilateral and embedded reporter. Christenson's major projects at the Express-News include Witness to War, a special section recounting the invasion and early occupation of Iraq.
